What Is A Reveal Shot?

A reveal shot is a great camera movement technique used in videography and filmmaking to unveil a subject or space within a scene. It adds an element of surprise, anticipation, and visual impact to the footage.

In regards to real estate videos, a reveal shot can be effectively used to showcase different rooms, highlight architectural details, or emphasize specific features of a property.

By implementing a well-executed reveal shot in your real estate videos, you can enhance the visual storytelling, capture viewers’ attention, and showcase the property in an intriguing way.

How Do You Film A Reveal Shot?

Reveal shots are actually quite easy once you understand the concept and practice a bit. Follow the steps below and you’ll be filming great reveal shots in no time.

1. Start With A Close-Up

Begin the shot with a close-up of an object, such as a door handle, a unique feature, or an item of interest within the property. This creates a sense of mystery and intrigue.

Additionally, you can start with your camera close up against a wall, door, or another feature that will block your subject.

2. Slowly Reveal The Subject

Begin to move the camera either by pulling it back or panning out while keeping the subject in focus. This movement gradually reveals more of the surrounding area or room.

By moving either away from the wall or away from the subject, you slowly start to reveal the subject that you want to highlight. Thus, the name reveal shot.

3. Keep A Steady Pace

It’s important to maintain a smooth and steady pace throughout the movement to create a polished and professional look. Avoid jerky or shaky movements that can distract viewers.

You’ll want your subject in perfect focus, so make sure to move slowly and keep your focus on whatever feature you are highlighting.

4. Reveal The Full Scene

Continue the camera movement until the entire scene or room is fully revealed. This can be done by revealing the room’s layout, showcasing its size, or highlighting specific design elements.

Once you have moved full past the wall, door, or whatever object your were using to originally hide your subject, make sure you are showing the room properly, showing how your subject interacts in the room.

5. Finalize Focus On The Subject

Finally, focus in on the subject that you originally are looking to reveal. This can be a fireplace, staircase, or any other feature that highlights the property and shows it off in the best way possible.

This is the moment when the viewer full realizes what it is that you were revealing. Many times this can be a great way to “enter” the house in your video. A grand staircase and a reveal shot from behind the front door is a great combination that I utilize often.

When To Utilize A Reveal Shot

Reveal shots are best utilized when there is a great feature to showcase either outside or inside the property.

It’s commonly used early on in the video to really draw the viewers attention. That’s why grand staircases are such a common subject you see revealed.

Other common features that reveal shots are good for are fireplaces, dining tables, stained glass windows, pools, master bedrooms, or other major rooms and details in a home.
