What Is A 360 Camera And How Is It Used?

360 cameras are specialized devices designed to capture a complete 360 view of their surroundings. They typically have multiple lenses arranged in a circular configuration, allowing them to capture a 360-degree field of view.

In real estate photography, 360 cameras are used to capture immersive and interactive virtual tours of properties.

They help potential buyers to explore and navigate through a property virtually, providing a comprehensive view of the space. Chances are you’ve seen these in action on Zillow before.

The cameras capture a series of overlapping images, which are stitched together using specific softwares to create a 360-degree panoramic view.

By doing this from several different spots in the same home, you can create a virtual replica of how the property looks.

1. Plan It Out

Before you start capturing the 360 images, take a moment to plan your shots. Consider the flow of the property and identify key areas you want to showcase first.

Remove any clutter or distractions, and ensure that the space is clean and well-staged to highlight its best features.

Do this each time you move to a new section of the property.

2. Turn All The Lights On

Lighting plays a massive role in photography, and the same applies to 360 images. Ensure that the space is well-lit, avoiding harsh shadows or blown-out areas.

Natural light can work wonders, but be mindful of bright windows that might cause overexposure. Turning on all the lights in the house will help to make sure all areas are well lit.

This is especially important if the home or room doesn’t have many windows.

3. Use A Good Tripod

Stability is essential when capturing 360 images, as any movement or shake can result in distorted or blurry photos. Invest in a sturdy tripod to keep the camera steady throughout the capturing process. The stability helps maintain consistency and ensures sharp, high-quality images.

Additionally, some tripods need to have their legs very wide to properly support the camera. This can cause the legs to show up in the 360 image, which is obviously not ideal. A strong tripod can help avoid this.

4. Consider Camera Placement

Proper camera placement is crucial for capturing an accurate representation of the space. Place the 360 camera at the appropriate height and distance, typically slightly below eye level, to provide a natural viewpoint

Be mindful of reflections or objects that might obstruct the view and adjust the camera position accordingly. Think about what might be blocking the cameras view and either remove that object or move the camera.

5. Properly Edit The Images

After capturing your 360 images, utilize post-processing techniques to create images with better quality. Pay attention to details like color correction, exposure adjustments, and image sharpening to bring out the best in each shot.

There are various software options available to assist you in editing and presenting the images effectively. If you’re not confident editing 360 images, there are many qualified editors that can do it for you.
