What Is A Gimbal And Why Are They Important For Real Estate Videos

A gimbal is weighted device or a motorized stabilizer used to keep a camera steady during video recording. It consists of three motorized axes that work together to counteract camera movements and vibrations, resulting in smooth and stabilized footage.

For real estate videos, gimbals play a crucial role in capturing high-quality footage that showcases properties in the best possible light. Here’s a few reasons why gimbals are so important in capturing quality real estate videos:

  1. They stabilize the camera which makes the footage smoother.
  2. They allow the videographer to move the camera in all types of directions while keeping the movements smooth.
  3. Gimbals allow the videographer to quickly move from room to room without needing to reset other types of video equipment.
Overall, gimbals have proven to be essential tools for real estate videography as they provide stability, smooth movements, and professional-grade footage.

By utilizing a gimbal, real estate photographers can elevate their videos, effectively market properties, and engage potential buyers or renters with visually compelling content.

1. Start With Basic Movements

Begin by practicing fundamental movements with the gimbal to familiarize yourself with its controls and capabilities. Practice walking in a straight line while keeping the camera level. This exercise helps you develop a sense of balance and control over the gimbal’s movements.

Then practice moving from side to side. Make sure to do this slowly and as gently as possible. Once you can do both movements, you can start to put together good real estate videos.

2. Adjust Your Gimbal Settings

Explore the various settings and customization options available on your gimbal. These may include adjusting motor strength, responsiveness, and smoothness.

Experiment with different settings to find the optimal configuration that suits your shooting style and desired footage. Once you find the best settings for you, your videos will become much higher quality.

3. Use Two-Handed Grip Techniques

To further stabilize your footage, adopt a two-handed grip technique when operating the gimbal. This involves using one hand to hold the gimbal handle and the other hand to support the base or a designated stabilizing handle.

This technique minimizes unwanted vibrations or shakiness caused by hand movements. If your gimbal doesn’t have two grips, there is a good chance you can buy an additional piece to attach to it.

4. Plan Your Shots and Movements

Before starting a shoot, create a shot list or plan the specific camera movements you want to capture. Visualize the desired shots and determine how the gimbal can assist in achieving those movements.

This preparation ensures a more organized and efficient shooting process, resulting in smoother and more purposeful footage.

5. Experiment with Height Variations

Varying the height of your shots can add visual interest and a sense of depth to your real estate videos. Use the gimbal to smoothly transition between high-angle and low-angle shots.

For instance, you can start with a low-angle shot near the ground, slowly raise the camera to eye level, and then lift it higher for an aerial view. These height variations provide a unique perspective and showcase the property from different angles.
