How to Get Photography Insurance For Your Equipment

The main reason that people get photography insurance is to make sure that the cost of their gear is covered incase anything were to break, be lost, or get stolen. This isn’t surprising since photography gear tends to be quite expensive.

You’re going to have to make a list of all the equipment that you want covered and the replacement cost of said equipment. The replacement cost is equivalent to what the piece of gear would cost today brand new.

For example, say you want your Nikon D850 covered by insurance. Even if your Nikon D850 is 3 years old, you would perform a quick search on Nikon’s site to see what the price of a new D850 is, then attach that price to your D850 on your equipment list.

You’ll repeat this process for each piece of equipment you want insured. You don’t need to insure all of you equipment, but generally speaking, it’s really not that expensive to insure all your gear. Personally, I have every piece of equipment I own insured.

Decide on Liability Coverage: Insurance for Photography Business

Next you’ll need to decide if you want any sort of liability coverage. Many larger clients of mine require that I carry a general liability coverage plan, so I’ve personally had one for a number of years.

If you plan to work with larger clients (think large companies rather than individual clients) you’re going to need liability coverage eventually. It’s also just a good idea to have incase anything were to go seriously wrong while you were on a job.

Liability coverage can cover you for everything from getting hurt on the job to accidentally breaking something extremely expensive. You don’t want to be on the hook for that absurdly expensive vase you knocked off the mantel as you were lining up the perfect shot.
