What Is Twilight Photography?

Twilight photography is a style of real estate photography that captures photos of a property at dusk or during the time surrounding sunset.

This time happens approximately 20 minutes after the sun has set, although this is a loose rule that changes depending on the look you’re going for.

The unique lighting conditions during this time create beautiful and dramatic effects on the property. Chances are you have seen real estate twilight photography before as it’s quite popular and visually appealing.

Although you don’t need the highest end photography gear on the market to capture twilight photos, you will need several key pieces of gear if you want to walk away with some quality photos.

Is Gear The Most Important Factor For Twilight Photography?

Timing plays a pivotal role in twilight photography, but the truth is that without the proper gear, you’re not going to get those really high-end twilight photos that we all love.

For example, an iPhone is capable of taking of photo of a home during twilight hours, and it actually might do a decent job if the lighting is good. However, if the lighting isn’t favorable, you’ll never get a good twilight photo with an iPhone.

It’s for this reason that gear is the most important factor in twilight photography.

Photography Gear Needed For Twilight Photography

The list of gear needed for twilight photography is actually somewhat short. There are 3 absolutely key pieces of equipment.

1. A Good Camera

You’ll need a camera that is capable of capturing photos in low light. Virtually all professional cameras are going to be able to handle twilight photos, but some are much better than others.

My choice for the best camera for twilight photography would be the Sony a7R IV.

However, if you’re just wondering if your camera is capable, or you are more interested in a budget option, you can check out our article featuring the best cameras for real estate photography.

Every camera on that list will be excellent for real estate photography.

2. A Wide Angle Lens

You’ll need a wide angle lens that has some solid low light performance. My top choice as far as lenses go would be the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8.

3. A Sturdy Tripod

Without a doubt one of the most important pieces of gear for twilight photography, a sturdy tripod is 100% necessary.

You’ll be capturing photos that can take several seconds to full expose. That means handheld is completely out of the question.

My choice for the best tripod for twilight photography is the Manfrotto 055 with a standard ball head.

Just like with the camera and lens, if you’re interested in seeing more options for sturdy tripods, you can give this article a read: Best Tripods for Real Estate Photography.
