When To Hire Another Photographer For Your Real Estate Photography Business

As a solo operator running a real estate photography business, there comes a time when you should probably consider scaling. Your skill and hard work have paid off, your client list has grown, and now you find yourself in a crunch.

In this article I’ll discuss when to hire another photographer for your real estate photography business and some red flags that can signal it’s probably time to hire.

You Can't Keep Up With Your Schedule

The most glaring sign that you need to hire additional help is an overflowing schedule that you simply cannot keep up with.

If you’re consistently working long hours or scrambling to meet deadlines, it’s clear that your solo operations are stretched too thin.

Hiring another real estate photographer is a clear next step that will allow you to expand your business and reduce your working hours.

Here’s 3 things to consider if you find yourself in this position:

  • Loss of Work-Life Balance: If your work starts to significantly interfere with your personal life, it’s a sign you probably need some help. It’s easy to work 60+ hours a week as a real estate photographer, so you need to decide what type of work life balance you want.
  • Mistakes and Oversights: When you’re too busy, the quality of your work can suffer. Missing appointments, rushing through shoots, or failing to deliver photos on time are major red flags that you need to deal with.
  • Limited Time for Post-Production: The real estate photography process isn’t just about shooting; editing is crucial. A crammed schedule could cut into your post-production time, affecting the quality of your final product. If you either don’t want to outsource your editing or already do and are still far too busy, it’s probably time to hire.

You're Turning Away Potential Clients

New client inquiries are generally a good problem to have. However, it’s only a matter of time before prospective clients start looking elsewhere if you’re unable to fit them into your schedule.

Real estate photography can be a referral based business, so as your business grows it makes sense that you will start to receive more inquires from potential clients. This can represent some serious potential for increasing your revenue.

If you are consistently turning away potential clients, it might be worth hiring another photographer so you can start to accept this new clients and continue to grow your client list.

You Need To Focus On High End Shoots Or Customer Relations

As the business owner, you may want to specialize in more high end shoots that require your specific expertise or focus more on customer relations to grow your business.

Although it’s great to get your real estate photography business to a point where you’re photographing high end and high paying properties all the time, you can still accept jobs that aren’t considered high end.

You might not have the time to photograph these lower end properties, however, if you hire another photographer, you can start to accept all the jobs that come your way and free up more of your time.

Customer relations is a pretty big part of any real estate photography business. Hiring another real estate photographer to handle the less important jobs and clients will clear your schedule to cater to your best and most important jobs.

Networking, customer relations, and strategic planning are vital for business growth but are also quite time consuming. An extra set of hands can free up your time for these critical tasks.
